Costain hosts NEF Masterclass

Costain and NEF: The Innovation Institute to host BIM Masterclass in Maidenhead

As the government looks to ensure that Building Information Modelling (BIM) is used on all centrally procured projects by 2016, the need to train future BIM users to an accepted industry standard cannot be overestimated.

BIM and 3D modelling are a vital part of the design, construction, maintenance and operation process, both in the planning and execution of projects, but becoming technically proficient on BIM in the classroom can be quite different to what is expected on a live project.

That is why Costain is hosting a BIM Masterclass at its head office in Maidenhead of Thursday 27th February. The all-day event is being organised in conjunction with NEF: The Innovation Institute and is aimed at Further Education curriculum leaders and lecturers.

By focusing on the education and training side of the technology it is hoped that instructors in BIM modules will focus on the right areas, said Harrison O’Hara, a Mobile BIM Technician at Costain.

“The seminar will provide an indication of our expectation of future apprentices and students wishing to pursue a career in BIM. The BIM Masterclass is a great opportunity for Costain to share our knowledge and experience with further education leaders and lecturers in a subject area that is impacting the whole industry,” said Harrison.

Some of the speakers include Matt Blackwell who, as Head of BIM at Costain, is responsible for Costain’s BIM strategy, while Senior Costain BIM Technicians Sandra Reis and Bryn Evans will talk about 4D and 5D modelling and give a live BIM demonstration. Harrison will also discuss the capabilities of mobile technology in the industry and provide recommendations for future implementation.

Elsewhere, David Owens, a BIM and Design Manager working on the A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Improvement project will discuss the setting up of a Common Data Environment in accordance with BS1192:2007; and Richard Lane, the BIM Training Development Officer of the UK BIM Task Group will talk about UK BIM Task Group’s training strategy across a number of UK central government departments.

Director of Programmes at NEF, Dr Sarah Peers, said: "NEF Masterclasses offer further education colleges a unique view of the latest technologies and skills requirements for industry. I was delighted when Costain offered to host an event on a true game changer for the construction industry.  This will be a fabulous opportunity for lecturers to hear from leaders in BIM and innovation in construction. "

The presentations will be followed by a workshop, discussion and Q&A overseen by the NEF. The event is from 9.30am to 4pm. For more information about the event, please contact: sarah.peers@thenef.org.uk
