Effective prioritisation is an integral part of any innovation management system. Whether we are considering choosing the best ideas, picking the best people, or the tweaking of the right process handles for process optimisation, a systematic approach to prioritisation is essential. In this one-day programme, you’ll learn about the theories behind effective prioritisation and, through examples and exercises, be introduced to a range of tools, from simple to comprehensive, which can be immediately deployed in your organisation to improve your prioritisation effectiveness.

This Prioritisation for Innovation Programme will cover the following topics over the day:

  • The theories behind effective prioritisation

  • A range of prioritisation tools will be presented, from simple to more comprehensive, commensurate with the complexity of the options you are choosing between:
    • Simple Forced Pair Comparison (FPC)
    • Probability of Success Matrices
    • Prioritisation (C&E) Matrices
    • Real, Win, Worth (RWW) Analysis
    • Risk-Adjusted Cost-Benefit MCDA
  • The importance of involvement and engagement in the decision-making process will be discussed and the approach of ‘Decision Conferencing’ to ensure good buy-in and the development of effective criteria and weightings


This programme is appropriate for managers and decision-makers from any industry who want to improve their organisation's effectiveness in prioritising the many options that are faced with as part of everyday business operations. It is equally suited for professionals from established companies or from start-ups. No specific prior knowledge is required, though it would help discussion and the embedding of the learning if participants come prepared to share broad areas where they currently have need of more systematic prioritisation.

Prof Phillip (Phil) Kennedy

PhD MSc BSc (Hons) FIKE

Phil is a Senior Advisor with the IKE Institute, a Visiting Professor at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and CEO of Nanoforce Technology Ltd, a QMUL owned spin-out company specialising in novel polymer and ceramic technologies.

Prior to taking up these positions, Phil worked for over 33 years for the well-respected, multi-national company, 3M Corporation. Throughout his varied career, Phil has gathered valuable experience in the areas of: 

  • Practical technical leadership experience at a senior level across a range of technical functions from new product development (NPD), to customer support and product engineering
  • Marketing in a technical organisation
  • Process optimisation through Six Sigma methodology
  • Streamlining and reinforcing of the New Product Development (NPD) process through the adoption of Design for Six Sigma methodology
  • Prioritisation techniques and their practical use for project selection and portfolio management
  • Voice of Customer (VOC) and Voice of Market (VOM) methodologies that feed into the NPD process and help ensure that what is developed is commercially successful
  • Innovation – the key elements of building an innovative organisation
  • External technology scouting; links with academia and government innovation networks
  • Idea capture, triage, and management
  • Regulatory Affairs - working with government departments and with technical standards committees at both the UK and European levels.
