The Government Announces Steps to Help Employers Take on Apprentices

John Hayes MP, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, has announced an action plan to encourage employers to take on apprentices at CBI on Tuesday. He highlighted a scheme being piloted by over 20 employers in which employers are paid based on outcome.

The Minister also highlighted the need to streamline the process by which employers take on apprentices including providing an employer “tool-kit”, contracting support, reworking of audit and inspection systems, and a clear certification process.

Andy Palmer, BT Director of Education and Skills and NEF panel member, participated in the event and commented:

"For the last year BT has worked as part of BIS’s Employer Reference Group to improve the system and reduce the burdens on employers. The changes we are proposing will have a significant impact on bureaucracy rather than merely tinkering at the edges.”

The NEF welcomes the proposed changes to deliver 50,000 additional apprenticeships and looks forward to working with companies to develop the NEF Assured Apprenticeships standard.

About NEF Assured Apprenticeships:

The lack of a clear standard for apprenticeship schemes that assure high quality and consistency of delivery has led a number of companies to work closely with NEF to develop the NEF Assured Apprenticeships standard. This new standard will ensure continuous improvement and innovation in training and development, transferability of skills, and have a direct impact on business objectives and on the individual learners. The NEF Assured Apprenticeships framework ensures the competency and technical knowledge required by apprentices in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-related disciplines is delivered consistently to the industry standard.
