New e-Learning Programme for Education Managers Reaches the Colleges

Why is innovation and active leadership crucial to steer colleges through times of austerity? Answer: these qualities help colleges to change and adapt to market conditions. With this in mind NEF has created and launched the e-Learning professional development programme "Active Leadership and Innovation" aimed at middle education managers. The programme consists of 5 interactive Modules: Leading the way; Horizon scanning; Making it happen; Taking the risk and Team-led innovation. ‘Active Leadership and Innovation’ is supported by LSIS, its completion attracts 20 CPD points. The programme is being distributed to UK colleges by NEF free of charge.

CEO of NEF, Sa’ad Medhat said ‘It is easy at a time when everyone is looking to make cuts and drive up efficiencies, to forget that in challenge, rewards can be found. It is not always about retrenching and consolidating. By looking beyond the usual, the predictable; by changing mindsets, stretching capability and nurturing talent, opportunities can be sought out. NEF's ‘Active Leadership and Innovation’ will help colleges to do just that.’

NEF believes that innovation and active leadership is crucial to steer colleges through times of austerity. These qualities help colleges to look strategically, drive operationally and think tactically to use all their talents to stay ahead.

Notes for editors:

1. The New Engineering Foundation (NEF) was established in 2004 as a grant awarding charity and a think-tank that supports the development of Vocational Education in science, engineering and technology through providing policy advice and advocacy, undertaking and commissioning research studies and impact analyses, as well as developing and delivering educational programmes and resources.

2. Active Leadership and Innovation programme was developed by the NEF and focuses on improving the leadership capability of curriculum and middle managers. The programme includes the development of five e-learning modules:

  • Leading the way
  • Horizon Scanning
  • Making the Case
  • Assessing the risk
  • Innovating the Team

The modules are highly interactive with a number of case studies from college senior managers focusing on key areas of discussion.

The programme has been funded by LSIS under the Flexibility and Innovation Fund.
